globeHamachi + Real VNC

You understand how to use Hamachi and Real VNC, they both have strengths and weaknesses. Combine them together to create an ultimate package with full secure remote access control. Easily access your whole network of computers remembering only one IP address in a secure environment for free! Again, check out LogMeIn's free version of a VNC via the web because it is much more practical; however, if you are blocked from that web site and are able to install software, this is a solution.

1. Learn how to use Hamachi and Real VNC - Once you have taken the time to learn about how both Hamachi and VNC work you are ready to combine them together.

vnc22. Secure your Real VNC Server - You should block all IP addresses that you wont use to access your Real VNC server. This will ensure you wont have any intruders possibly getting through (not very likely if you don’t do this). While Real VNC Server is running click on it’s icon in the lower right corner of your computer’s screen. Proceed to the “connections” tab. Go to “access control” and click “add.” Since all of Hamachi’s IP addresses start with a 5.x.x.x enter5.0.0.0/255.0.0.0, (this means anything starting with a 5. gets through and the zeros can be any number) this ensuresonly a Hamachi IP address can get through to it. You can add just your Hamachi IP addresses by you want to leave itvague enough so that if you need to install Hamachi on another computer for access you will be able to get access withouthaving to worry about going home and allowing another IP address. If you are using strong passwords you will be fine. You will not be able to remote access your computer with a web browser doing this. If you want to view your computer through a web browser, omit this and the next steps.

vnc33. Run Real VNC Viewer - Open Real VNC viewer just like you were going to access a computer stated on the Remote Access your computer page, only this time you do not enter the IP address of your network from your ISP, you enter the IP address given to the computer you installed Hamachi and Real VNC. It is important that you install Hamachi on thecomputer you are using to access your computer at home or this will not work (the computer at home only accepts specific IP addresses from Hamachi.

4. Secure your Passwords - If you are using true real long 64 character strands of pure random jibberish for passwords, there is no way you will remember them. If you are on the go and using Hamachi and Real VNC is something you think you will use often you are going to want to figure an easy way to keep your passwords safe but easily obtainable. I think the best way to do this is to encrypt them on a USB key where if you lost the key, there was no possible way for anyone but you to obtain them. This is addressed on the Encrypt USB keys page.
